The Spirit of Meekness

What does it mean to be meek from a biblical standpoint? Meekness is the ability to be humble, patient and gentle. It’s not weakness or passivity but rather strength under control. It’s the ability to be assertive without being aggressive. It’s also a willingness to serve others, even at your own expense. Meekness is a biblical virtue. It’s one of the fruits of the Spirit that are listed in Galatians 5:22-23.

Meekness is a virtue that’s often misunderstood and undervalued. Meekness isn’t weakness or passivity but rather strength under control. It’s the ability to be assertive without being aggressive. It’s also a willingness to serve others, even at your own expense.

The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness and self-control. If someone asked you to describe Christ, what would you say? Would it be that He was aggressive, angry and violent? Or would it be that He was meek and gentle? The Bible tells us that Jesus was meek and gentle. He didn’t scream and yell at people or use violence to make His point. He had a lot of opinions, but when He spoke, it was in love and kindness. When He healed people, they were often healed completely without any pain or suffering involved. When Jesus spoke, people were drawn to Him because they felt safe. They knew He wouldn’t hurt them or try to force them into something they didn’t want to do. That is what it means to be a follower of Christ: being meek and gentle like Jesus was. Jesus called us to be like Him. He said, “Be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:48).

You may think that you can’t be perfect, but God doesn’t expect us to be perfect; He wants us to strive for it. The Bible says that we should imitate God and Jesus Christ (Ephesians 5:1). We are supposed to be like Jesus in every way possible. You can’t be perfect at this very moment, but you can strive to become more like Christ every day. If you want to be a better person and have more influence on others, then follow these steps:

1) Choose to be meek and gentle like Jesus.

2) Read the Bible and soak in His words of truth.

3) Ask God to help you live out His will for your life.
